Nerve Blocks

Living a life with chronic pain can feel overwhelming. The team at The Family Pain and Wellness is dedicated to helping you find relief and get back to the life you enjoy. Nerve blocks are one of the many tools we use to diagnose and manage pain. Contact us and we will help you learn what nerve blocks are, how they work, and the specific types we offer.

What are Nerve Block Injections

A nerve block is a procedure where medication is injected near a specific nerve or group of nerves. The medication, usually a local anesthetic similar to what a dentist uses, temporarily interrupts pain signals sent to your brain. This can provide significant relief.

Sometimes, a corticosteroid is added to the injection to reduce inflammation around the nerve, which can offer longer-lasting benefits.

We use these injections for two main reasons: as a diagnostic tool to pinpoint the exact source of your pain and as a therapeutic treatment to provide pain relief that can last for weeks or months.

Types of Nerve Blocks We Offer

1. Occipital Nerve Blocks

Occipital nerve blocks are focused on the back of the head. The occipital nerves run from the top of your spinal cord up through your scalp. When these nerves become irritated or inflamed, they can cause headaches and migraines.

An injection in this area can calm the nerve, reducing the frequency and intensity of these headaches.

2. Genicular Nerve Blocks

Genicular nerve blocks target the nerves around the knee joint, known as the genicular nerves. If you have chronic knee pain, especially from arthritis, these nerves can send constant pain signals. By gently numbing these nerves, we can provide relief for those who may not want or are not ready for surgery.

3. Cluneal Nerve Blocks

Cluneal nerve blocks address pain in the lower back and buttocks. The cluneal nerves provide sensation to this area. Irritation here is a common cause of lower back pain that can feel similar to sciatica. This block helps us determine if these nerves are the source of your discomfort and can offer a path to relief.

4. Ganglion Impar Blocks

Ganglion impar blocks are used for pain in the pelvic and rectal area (coccydynia). The ganglion impar is a small group of nerves located at the very bottom of your spine. This block can be helpful for pain that is challenging to manage with other treatments.

5. Sympathetic Nerve Blocks

Sympathetic nerve blocks focus on a part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions like blood flow. Conditions like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) can cause this system to malfunction, leading to severe burning pain, swelling, and changes in skin color.

A sympathetic nerve block helps reset these nerves and improve blood flow.

6. Selective Nerve Root Blocks

These nerve blocks are used for pain that radiates from the spine into your arms or legs, such as sciatica.

This procedure involves precisely targeting the specific spinal nerve root that is inflamed or compressed, often due to a herniated disc. It is both an excellent diagnostic tool to identify the problematic nerve and a way to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the source.
